A practical guide for
new collectors and veterans alike

Use this page in two ways: as a grounded buying guide for UK collected editions, or as a quick route into the subscription details if you already know you want the alerts.

menu_book

New collectors

You are still working out where to buy, when to preorder, what a good discount looks like, and how much packing should matter when you are buying hardcovers or omnis.

library_books

Regular buyers

You already buy collected editions, but you want a better framework for comparing retailers, judging discounts, and knowing when an alert is worth acting on immediately.

inventory_2

Omni and hardcover collectors

You care about corners, dents, shrink-wrap, return friction, and whether a cheap copy is actually worth the packaging risk.

How do I start?

A lot of newcomers feel like they need a perfect plan before buying anything and feel overwhelmed. The easiest way to start actually simpler than one would expect. Pick one lane that interests you the most and then build from there.

sentiment_satisfied

Favourite characters

If you already love a character like Batman, Spider-Man, Green Lantern, or Daredevil, that is a perfectly valid place to begin. You can also start with a favourite team like X-Men, Justice League, or the Avengers.

movie

Films, shows, games

If an adaptation sparked your interest, use that as your way in. You do not need to read everything in universe order to enjoy reading and collecting. There are always good jumping on points for almost all characters and teams.

public

Publisher or universe

Sometimes the easiest choice is simply deciding which feels most exciting. If you're not a fan of Marvel & DC, there is a whole world of excellent creator-owned works from other publishers that are worth exploring.

shelves

Format and shelf style

A lot of people decide between omnis, thick trades, deluxe hardcovers, or large format editions. If you're worried about the price, digital versions are a great way to try out a series before committing to a physical format.

Deciding when to buy

Secure it early when scarcity matters

arrow_rightPreorder when a book looks likely to be in demand, the launch discount is already respectable, or missing the book matters more than shaving off a few extra pounds later. If you want peace of mind, preorder before the Final Order Cutoff date to ensure your order is factored in the publisher's print run.

Wait when availability looks comfortable

arrow_rightIf the book looks likely to stay available for a while and the early discount is only modest, patience often improves the outcome. DC Comics, for example, is excellent in keeping books in circulation for a lot longer than other publishers and often reprints books.

Judge the full basket, not just the sticker price

doneCompare against RRP
doneFactor in postage
doneConsider packing and condition risk on heavier books

Treat some restocks as the decision point

arrow_rightOlder omnis, scarce hardcovers, and sought-after editions often become "buy now or miss it again" moments when a restock appears. This is especially true for Marvel books, who print close to the preorder numbers and do not always reprint.

Objective retailer context

No single retailer wins every time. This section stays factual and practical, so you can make up your own mind. Some cards reflect UK Graphic Novel Deals coverage; others are included here because they are still useful for buying and comparison options.

UK Graphic Novel Deals is a graphic novel deals community, built around helping collectors find better prices, track releases, and spot restocks. While our coverage is centred on UK retailers, collectors from anywhere are welcome to join the community. The subreddit offers free curated deal posts, while Discord adds automated alerts, broader retailer coverage, and personalised notifications through the paid tiers.
The catalogue focuses on collected editions: omnibus hardcovers, trade paperbacks, epic collections, absolutes, deluxe editions, and other graphic novel formats tracked in the release database.
Right now the live tracking focuses on three publishers, with more planned over time. New publishers are not added casually; we take time to curate properly so the catalogue reflects what the community is actually interested in collecting.
Manga is not a core part of the live tracking yet, but it is very much on the radar. The most likely starting point is deluxe edition hardcovers, especially as publishers continue expanding that format and collector interest grows around it.
The current focus is on collected editions where collector demand and deal signals are stronger. Interest in thick trade paperback collected editions (like Compendiums, Epics and DC Finest) is growing much faster in the community than standard TPBs. So, we're prioritising those formats to keep the alerts more useful and better aligned with our community's interests.

Reader tier is recommended if you want a simple BooksEtc monitoring experience, as that's your primary retailer. Collector tier is recommended if you want to know the best deals across the UK. Completionist tier is recommended if you want to be selective about which deals you want to be personally notified, based on your preferences.
Reader tier covers alerts from BooksEtc only in tier exclusive publisher hyperlanes (Discord channels).
Collector tier covers alerts from all retailers in tier exclusive publisher hyperlanes.
Completionist tier has access to the same hyperlanes as Collector tier, and exclusively offers 'My D3-LZ', a personal deals assistant experience with options for DM alerts with filters for publisher, line, series, creator, and ISBN.
We will take card payments. Checkout and payments are handled by Whop, our subscription management platform. The exact card payment options available to you are shown during checkout.
After payment, Whop redirects you to a confirmation page where you connect your Discord account. This is the step that assigns your Discord account to your subscription tier. Without it, you will not have access to the service. Once connected, all members gain access to the tier exclusive hyperlanes immediately. Completionist members also get exclusive access to setup My D3-LZ inside Discord to configure personalised DM alerts.
All plans are monthly and can be cancelled through Whop at any time. Access continues until the end of your current billing period.

To move to a different tier, you will need to cancel your current subscription and subscribe to the new tier separately. Whop does not currently support a one-click tier swap.

If you cancel partway through a billing period, your access will continue until it expires before the new tier begins.
Not at launch. The focus is on keeping the service simple and reliable first. The public pages and screenshots are there to show exactly what the product looks like before you commit.
The paid tiers are not just about unlocking alert access. They sit inside the wider UK Graphic Novel Deals community on Discord, where collectors follow the same deal flow, keep up with what is moving across the market, and share the experience around the hobby. All subscribed members also have access to the Collectors' Cantina space for discussion, recommendations, and general collector chat. Community Voted Hyperlanes are also planned, giving members a say in the kinds of series- focused or creator-focused updates they want to receive.

Creating a Discord account and linking it through Whop is a simple process, and once your server access is granted, the alerts are logically structured and easy to follow. You do not need to be a Discord power user to use UK Graphic Novel Deals, and the How It Works page includes visuals so you can see exactly what to expect before you join.
After checkout, Whop shows a page for your plan. Look for the Connect Discord button, click it and authorise the connection when Discord prompts you. You only need to do this once. If you already use Discord in a browser or the desktop app, the authorisation takes under a minute. Once authorised, your role is assigned and you are in.
When new updates are available, they appear as new messages inside the relevant hyperlanes (Discord channels). If you are on Completionist tier, your personalised matches arrive as direct messages from "My D3-LZ" personal assistant. For the smoothest experience, it is worth downloading the Discord mobile app and allowing push notifications so general updates and personal notifications reach you as soon as they are available.
Yes. Alerts include direct links to the relevant retailer pages, so you can move straight from the Discord alert to the product listing when you are ready to buy.
“My D3-LZ” is the Completionist-tier exclusive personal deals assistant that sends personalised deal updates by DM. It is the same monitoring engine, but narrowed to the publishers, lines, series, creators, and ISBNs you actually care about.
You can follow exact ISBNs or broader collecting interests. For example, you can track a single book, a publisher line plus a series, and/or favourite creators. The setup flow is designed to keep updates focused rather than flooding you with hundreds of loose matches.
construction
At launch we track BooksEtc, SpeedyHen, Scifier and Reed Comics. Forbidden Planet and Amazon are in the buying guide and on the roadmap, but not yet in the live D3-LZ tracking scope.
Marvel and DC are checked every 3 hours. Image Comics and Dark Horse are checked twice daily. IDW is checked once daily. The system is built around regular scan windows rather than promising impossible second-by-second monitoring.
The D3-LZ engine checks live retailer pages and reports pricing based on what is shown there at the time of each scan. Retailer pages are still the final authority, and prices or stock can change between checks, especially on fast-moving books.
If every tracked retailer is out of stock, the D3-LZ engine will flag that book as currently unavailable. If another retailer still has stock when it's sold out at another retailer, D3-LZ will recommend the next cheapest option instead of leaving you guessing.
Not at launch. Amazon is part of the buying guide because it can still be a relevant option for buyers, but it is currently marked as coming soon rather than live in the D3-LZ engine.
Yes. Some retailer links on the site may be affiliate links, which means UK Graphic Novel Deals can earn a small commission if you buy through them. There is no extra cost to you, and it helps fund the tracking, hosting, and ongoing retailer expansion.

The point of the subscription is not to replace judgement. It is to reduce the manual checking so you can make better decisions faster.
